Choosing the Right Pendant Light for Your Kitchen or Dining Space

Pendant lights are one of the fastest ways to lift a kitchen or dining space — but a beautiful pendant hung at the wrong size or height can throw the whole room off. Here's how to get it right the first time.

Get the height right

Over a kitchen island or benchtop, hang pendants so the bottom of the shade sits roughly 75–85 cm above the surface. Over a dining table, the same range works well — high enough to see across the table comfortably, low enough to feel intimate. If you have very high ceilings, raise everything a little so the pendants stay in proportion with the room.

Match the size to the space

A common mistake is choosing a pendant that's too small. Over a dining table, a good rule of thumb is that the fixture (or the group of pendants together) should be around one-half to two-thirds the width of the table. Over an island, let the bench length guide you.

How many pendants?

For islands, spacing matters as much as number. Two or three evenly spaced pendants usually look balanced over a standard island — keep equal gaps between each pendant and the same distance from the ends. Over a dining table, a single statement pendant or a linear fixture often works better than a cluster.

Think about the light itself

In a kitchen you want light that's practical for prep, so a clear or open shade that throws light downward is ideal. Over a dining table, a warmer glow (around 2700K) and a slightly softer, diffused shade create a more relaxed mood for meals. A dimmer lets you switch between the two.
